In this mock judging class, the students become the judge as Kathi directs them through the judging process for each quilt. Kathi will provide a list of judging guidelines for the students to use as they assess the general appearance, design, workmanship, quilting, and finishing technique of each quilt. Students will be encouraged to make their own judging comments. The students will work together as a group to choose a Best of Show quilt from all judged pieces.
This is a great workshop following Kathi’s guild lecture What a Judge Sees.

This class is held in conjunction with a quilt show.
Should I enter a quilt in a judged show? How do I get my quilt ready for competition? Why does one quilt win a ribbon and another does not win? Do all judges use the same criteria? What do judges really see in only three to five minutes reviewing a quilt?
We will start in the classroom where Kathi will give you an in-depth look at judging criteria. The class will then move to the show floor where we will view several quilts through the eye of a judge. By the end of this class, you will be anxious to enter your quilt in the next available show.
Color is a vital part of our lives but yet is one of the most complex elements of design. We’ve all been there. When making a new quilt, we find ourselves drawn to the same colors we used time and time again. In this workshop, Kathi will guide students to knock down the color barriers they have developed, to step out of their color comfort zone, to try new color combinations. Fun exercises will have the students playing with all sorts of color possibilities.

Miniature quilts are not simply small. A true miniature employs scale and proportion as key elements. In this class Kathi will offer tips and tricks for the successful construction of a miniature quilt. Students will be guided through elements such as fabric and thread choices, block construction, quilting designs, and binding.
Kathi will provide pattern options from which the students will choose their project. Student will spend the remainer of class time working on their own project.
Confident beginner. Basic sewing skills are required.
This lecture is especially beneficial for guilds several months prior to their show. Similar to the classroom segment of What!?! Only 3-5 Minutes? this lecture will be customized to meet your group’s specific needs. Not only will members be encouraged to enter more quilts in your show, but the quality of those quilts should be improved when members apply their new-found knowledge.
Bright with lots of negative space. That’s how many people describe modern quilts. But the concept is much more complex and offers a wide variety of techniques. Using an array of quilt photos to describe modern quilt techniques, Kathi will explain the use of color, balance, improvisational piecing, and so much more that are all key elements in a successful modern quilt.

We’ve all been there. You look at two different quilts. One is very appealing and the other is missing the mark, but you don’t know exactly why. Fibonacci to the rescue!
The Fibonacci sequence is found all around us in nature and in this lecture, Kathi will unravel the mysteries of that perfect balance. This lecture will appeal to all types of quilters. The math geeks will love delving into the Fibonacci number sequences while those who aren’t nearly as fond of the subject will find comfort in ready-made charts that will make designing their next quilt so much easier.
Color is all around us. But do we really take the time to look at and see all the colors? In this lecture, Kathi will showcase many color combinations found in nature. She will then take those colors and transfer them to quilts – sometimes in obvious ways, but often in unpredictable ways. Open your eyes and prepare to see the world of colors around you. The options are endless.
